CLIENT
BEL-O Plumbing
Belleville, IL
FACILITY
BEL-O Plumbing was contracted with installing the mechanical systems at the new Army Reserve Training Center being constructed in Granite City, Illinois in 2008.
CHALLENGE
The structure was classified as a Seismic Design Category D by the project specifications due to the ground motion and soil conditions. As such, the US Army Corps of Engineers Technical Instruction 809-04 "Seismic Design for Buildings" requires the nonstructural components to be braced and anchored to resist the applicable seismic forces. CCS was brought into the project well after construction began which required more intensive field work to insure that the construction details match the site conditions.
SCOPE OF SERVICES
CCS Group provided the following hands on services to BEL-O Plumbing in the design of the nonstructural seismic restraints:
- Conduct a site review to verify existing anchorage, determine support and anchorage conditions, and determine potential interferences with installation.
Preliminary design calculations were then revised to reflect the field conditions
.
- Design the necessary bracing and anchorage to resist the seismic forces on the nonstructural components in compliance with the US Army Corps of Engineers code and specifications requirements.
- Coordinate the seismic bracing with other trades on site to insure all aspects of the contractor's obligations were met.
- Generate construction details for the installation of the necessary seismic bracing and anchorage for submittal to the Army Corps of Engineers.
OUTCOMES
- CCS Group engineers provided a rapid response and short turn around time to prevent delays to the project caused by BEL-O.
- CCS Group provided the seismic engineering calculations and project specific construction details required by the project requirements.
- By working collaboratively with the contractor through design, the construction details for the pipe bracing were issued while completing the final submittal package, thus preventing delays in installing ceilings and other finishes.
- CCS Group communicated with the contractor to provide constructible anchorage details for rapid installation.
