FACILITY
The Air Products Manufacturing facility in Maryland Heights completed a significant building expansion to increase their production capabilities.  This expansion provided two floors of additional space for production equipment and the required mechanical and electrical components to operate them.

CHALLENGE
The structure was classified as a Seismic Design Category D under 2003 International Building Code (IBC) due to the ground motion and soil conditions.  As such, the building code and St. Louis County require the nonstructural components to be braced and anchored to resist the applicable seismic forces.  CCS was brought into the project well after construction began which necessitated a rapid response to prevent delay to the opening of the facility.

SCOPE OF SERVICE

  • Perform preliminary seismic calculations to understand the earthquake demand on the applicable nonstructural components.
  • Conduct a site review to verify existing anchorage, determine support and anchorage conditions, and determine potential interferences with installation.
Calculate the applicable seismic design forces on the nonstructural components.
  • Design the necessary bracing and anchorage to resist the seismic forces on the nonstructural components in compliance with the 2003 IBC and ACI 318.
  • Generate construction details for the installation of the necessary seismic bracing and anchorage.
Prepare the Seismic Code Block for Nonstructural Components to comply with the St. Louis County Ordinance.

OUTCOMES

  • CCS Group engineers provided a rapid response and short turn around time to prevent further delays to the beginning of the facility’s operation.
  • CCS Group provided the engineering calculations and construction details to comply with the St. Louis County Ordinance allowing Air Products to receive their occupancy permit.
  • By working collaboratively with the contractor through design, the construction details were issued while completing the calculations to expedite the anchorage installation.
  • CCS Group worked with contractors to provide constructible anchorage details for rapid installation.
